Man Arrested After Abandoning Bride at Ikoyi Marriage Registry and Escaping with Her Money
A 45-year-old man, Uzor Emmanuel, is currently in police detention after abandoning a woman, Victoria Adeleye, at the Federal Marriage Registry in Ikoyi, Lagos, and escaping with her four million naira.
Emmanuel, a married father of three, proposed to Victoria a few months ago. On the day of their wedding, he left her at the court premises and fled with her money. The wedding was subsequently called off following Emmanuel’s disappearance.
Friends of the couple, who attended the wedding ceremony, were shocked as marriage officials canceled the wedding. According to a source, the relationship between Adeleye and Emmanuel began after they met at a church in Isolo. Unknown to Adeleye, Emmanuel was already married with three children. He told her he was single and needed to marry as he was getting older.
Adeleye, eager to find a husband, showed interest and became close to Emmanuel. After a short courtship, Emmanuel proposed, and she accepted. He moved into Adeleye’s flat in Aswani, Isolo, where they lived together without the knowledge of their pastor and church members.
To formalize their relationship, Emmanuel suggested they go to court to consummate the marriage legally. Adeleye agreed and provided the money for the marriage arrangements. On the wedding day, Emmanuel excused himself and left the registry, fleeing with her money.
Emmanuel was later arrested following a tip-off. He confessed to having a wife and children and admitted he was only interested in Adeleye’s money. He was charged before the Isolo Magistrate’s Court for obtaining under false pretenses and stealing under the Criminal Code. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. He is currently remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Lagos, pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions. The matter was adjourned till October 2, 2014, for trial
