Jean Jacob Schweppe, born in 1740 in Witzenhausen, Germany, was originally a watchmaker and lived as a young man in Geneva. In 1783, he invented an efficient system for manufacturing carbonated mineral water. By 1790, he entered into a partnership to expand the business and established a factory in London.
Jean Jacob Schweppe passed away in 1821. In 1834, John Kemp-Welch and William Evill purchased J. Schweppe & Co., expanding the product range to include flavored soda drinks such as lemonade.
