History of Jean Jacob Schweppes

Jean Jacob Schweppe, born in 1740 in Witzenhausen in Germany was originally a watch maker an lived as a young man in Geneva.
In 1783 he invented an efficient system for the manufacture of carbonated mineral water, and in 1790 he enter into a partnership to expand the business and establishes a factory in London.
Jean Jacob Schweppe dies in 1821, and in 1834 John Kemp-Welch and William Evill buy J. Schweppe & Co, and extend the product range to include flavoured soda drinks such as "lemonade"
In 1870 Schweppes introduces Tonic Water and Ginger Ale, and Tonic Water soon becomes popular with the british in India, as it contains quinine, used as a perventative measure against malaria.
In 1957 Schweppes Bitter Lemon is launched and in 1978 Schweppes Lemon is launched.
